Why I Created ArtBug Mail
-
In our home our three children create lots and lots of drawings and paintings. Until we created ArtBug Mail, most of their art had been 'lost' in our weekly decluttering effort. This was unfortunate because if we had enough time, space and ability, we would have kept far more of their work so that we could review it again in years time and also see how their artistic skills developed.

One day I bought a scanner and on occasion I would scan their pictures and store them on our computer. At about this time, my children became interested in using the computer to create art. They soon realised that if they asked me, I would email the pictures I scanned and the pictures they created on the computer to their grandparents, uncles, aunts and Santa (if they were good).
It didn't take long for me to realise that I was spending huge amounts of my time getting the pictures sent. Finding the image files was a real chore! - you try teaching a 6 year old how to name and organise their picture files!!
We don't let our kids use email as there is too much spam that always manages to get through, so in our house I used to send the pictures using my email account. Making sure that the pictures are sent 'from' the correct child to the correct person was also a task that required much time, concentration and cross-referencing my wife, "Who drew this one? - are you sure? it looks more like Felix's - you are sure aren't you?"If the wrong relation thanks the wrong child for the picture, well, you probably already know what the result would be.
If that's what life was like before I created ArtBug Mail, how has ArtBug Mail improved our lives?
-
Obviously getting the children to be more autonomous was what was needed. However, my children are too young to be exposed to the risks of owning real email accounts, so I had to come up with something better.
Together we designed an application called "ArtBug Mail" that is powerful enough to allow them to paint pictures, scan in their paintings and also 'email' the pictures to relatives. You can see screenshots of the ArtBug Mail application here.
Artbugmail.com also creates galleries of each of my children's artworks so that friends and family can see their creations online. One of the best parts of this is they can send me pictures while I am at work. I certainly keeps me connected with them.
ArtBug Mail has freed up my time.
-
My only involvement has been to set up seperate logons each of my children on our home computer, and accounts for them on artbugmail.com. This took no more than 30 minutes of my time.
Now, I do not need to search my computer for their picture files, I no longer need to compose the emails. All these time consuming tasks are automatically taken care of by the artbugmail.com service. I now have more time for the things I rarely get to do.
My Kids and Family are having Fun
-
Months later my children are sending pictures to their grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins all by themselves. I've even set up their accounts so that they can send me pictures to me while I am at work. Getting a new picture is now the highlight of my day!
ArtBug Mail is SAFE
-
ArtBug is not an email client or an instant messenger.
CHILDREN DO NOT NEED ANY FORM OF EMAIL ACCOUNT TO USE ARTBUG MAIL.
Because of this, they cannot receive emails, so there is no risk of them receiving nasty spam laden with adult material, spyware or viruses. Nobody can email my children.
ArtBug Mail enables me to display my children's art easily
-
Because ArtBug Mail automatically creates a gallery it makes it really easy to share their art so it can be enjoyed by more people. If you're interested in seeing their art, you can visit their galleries here and here. When you sign up to ArtBug Mail, you get your own gallery which is private - you have to give out a guest password so that other people can access it.
How is ArtBug Mail Funded?
-
ArtBug Mail is entirely funded out of the lint in my pockets, subscriptions and from discrete advertising on free accounts. There is no advertising in the software nor on the gallery pages/tutorial pages that children visit via the software.
The emails that are sent using the ArtBug Mail service contain only a tiny signature that shows that the ArtBug Mail service was used. The emails DO NOT contain any other advertising whatsoever. It's this way because I only want emails from my kids to contain the pictures that they created - that's the whole point of the ArtBug Mail service! There is absolutely NO advertising in the ArtBug Mail application either (see the screenshots)
What if I don't like ArtBug Mail?
-
I really hope that your children enjoy creating and sending pictures using the ArtBug Mail service, and building a personal gallery on the ArtBug Mail website. I really hope that you and your loved ones really enjoy getting the pictures delivered to you. However, if you are not completely happy, let me know what you want to see improved. YES I MEAN IT!
