ArtBug Mail Account Questions

  1. Do I have to use my real name?
    • No - It's completely optional.
However, it's a good idea to supply your real name because when your children send pictures, the people that receive the email will find it easier to associate the email with you and your child.

This is an example email footer where the account owner did not specify their real name. The area of interest is hightlighted in this example:
This is an example email footer where the account owner (myself) did not specify their real name

This is an example email footer where the account owner did specify their <br>real name
  2. What is an Account Title for? - Do I need one?
    • It's optional, but it makes links to your gallery easier to read and remember.

For, example, which would you prefer?

      http://www.artbugmail.com/galleries/12637/
      http://www.artbugmail.com/galleries/the_seanor_gallery/
  3. Account Users
    • You can register up to 4 children as "users" of your account. The pictures that they create are tagged with their names and inserted into your gallery.

You should register your children with their real names, or with their nicknames, because when artbugmail.com sends their pictures onto people in your email list, their name is included in the email's 'From' field and the subject line.

For example, this is what Will's grandad sees when Will sends him a picture: (I have altered the email addresses for privacy)
      example email headers
Attention!: In the example above, because I am the account owner, the email looks to have been sent by me, but using Will's name. When your children send pictures, the 'From' address will be your email address, not mine!
Note 1: artbugmail.com does not use your email account to send emails. You do not, at any time, need to specify your email account login credentials.
Note 2: In the example above. If Grandad wants to tell me how much he liked the picture, all he has to do is hit 'reply' in his email client. I will get the reply directly from him. There is no direct feedback mechanism to Will - that's my responsibility!

Each child also has their own online gallery that is automatically updated when they send new pictures. The url to their galleries is like this:

      http://www.artbugmail.com/galleries/<your_gallery_title>/<your_childs_name>

For example, the link to my children's galleries are:
      http://www.artbugmail.com/galleries/the_seanor_gallery/hazel/
      http://www.artbugmail.com/galleries/the_seanor_gallery/felix/
      http://www.artbugmail.com/galleries/the_seanor_gallery/will/

  4. What happens if I rename one of my users?
  5. What is the date of birth used for?
    • Date of birth is used so that ArtBug can give you more contextual information about the pictures in your gallery.

    • We will also use the date of birth information to guide us when creating activities for the children using ArtBug Mail. We want the activities to be appropriate for the ages of the children.
The activities are optional "backgrounds" that can be chosen when they use ArtBug to create their pictures.
  6. What is an "Address Book"?
    • An address book is simply the list of people that want to receive pictures from your children.

This address book is viewable only by yourself and is exclusively used by ArtBug for forwarding the pictures that your children create. We do not use your address book details for any other purpose.

  7. In my address book, do I really have to use real names?
    • You do need to enter a name into this field. However, you don't have to use real names. The 'real name' field is there to help you to remember who is who in your address book.

  8. What is a 'friendly name'?
    • A friendly name is the name that your children use when referring to someone in your address book. For example, my children know my dad as 'Grandad', and my father-in-law as 'Grandpa'.

If you are Premium Account holder, the 'friendly' names are selectable in the ArtBug application that you have installed. This means your children can chose who to send their pictures to.

Friendly names also appear in the emails that are sent:

      example email headers
You may be wondering why Will's name appears with my email address?
      - No he's not using my email account! (really!!) - follow this link for more information.

If you have a Basic Account, then your children cannot choose who they send their pictures to. Instead, artbugmail.com sends a notification email to everyone in your address book to tell them that your child has created a new picture, and provides a link to the picture in the email.
  9. Can I stop pictures from appearing in my gallery?
    • For example: my children are home schooled. They use ArtBug to scan and send their work to their teacher. I do not want these scan to appear in the online gallery.

By default all pictures that are mailed are automatically collected by your gallery.

However, if you are Premium Account holder, you can disable the collection of pictures that are sent to specific people:

Go to your address book and, in the row of the person, you should remove the check from the "add pictures to gallery" checkbox.

Note: This setting only affects new pictures. It will not hide pictures that are already in your gallery.

Email Questions

  1. what does a typical email look like?
    • It looks like this
Please note that in this example, the the email addresses at the bottom of the email has been masked out for privacy.

  2. The recipient says they are not receiving any pictures.
    • If a recipient says that a card you sent was never delivered, the first thing to check is whether we received your request to send the card. You can check this by logging on to your account viewing your gallery to see if the picture is in the gallery.

The next thing to check is whether you received a non-delivery report concerning that card. When a card (or any email) is sent, the responsibility for the delivery lies with the recipient's mailserver and if for any reason they are unable to deliver the mail, they will send a non-delivery report to the sender explaning why.

If you have received a non-delivery note for the card, please click here.

If you never received a non-delivery note, then it is almost certain that the card was in fact delivered to your recipient's mailbox. It is almost unheard of for a recipient's mailserver to refuse to deliver a card without sending a non-delivery notice back to the sender.

However, just because the card was delivered to the recipient's mailbox doesn't mean the recipient will have seen it! Many mail services include spam filtering facilities which will file suspect mail in a "quarantine" area, or even simply delete it.

Another possibility is that the e-mail address you entered was incorrect - but was actually the correct address of someone else altogether! That would explain why you did not receive a non-delivery notice.

If none of the above circumstances seem to explain the situation, and you've tried re-sending the card and still received no non-delivery reports, please click here.

  3. I received a notice saying it could not be delivered..
    • We're sorry we were unable to deliver the picture. Usually, this is because either the address you gave was incorrect, or there was some kind of spam filter or other obstruction which prevented delivery of our email.

The non-delivery report was generated by the recipient's mail service - not by our computers. So for example if you sent a card to xxxx@yahoo.com, then the non-delivery report would have come from Yahoo, not from us. All we can do is try to interpret the report and then forward it to you.

Therefore if the non-delivery report indicates that the address is incorrect, then it really is almost certainly incorrect: the recipient mailserver would have no reason to reject an address without good reason. So do please double-check the address - common mistakes include:

      • entering .net instead of .com at the end of the address (or vice-versa)
      • entering the letter O instead of the number zero, or vice-versa
      • entering the letter i or lower-case L instead of the number 1, or vice-versa
      • entering "www" at the beginning of the address - "www" is for websites, not email addresses!

If there is an error in the address you typed, then please be sure to correct the address in your Address Book. To do this, log on and then click Address Book in the menu.
